The sacristan has many essential roles in the preparation of the liturgy, including opening the church, laying out the chalices, preparing the bread and wine, marking the readings in the books, lighting the candles, and cleaning up the church after the liturgy. However, whilst most of the sacristan's work occurs before and after the liturgy, the sacristan must understand and stay attentive during the liturgy to know what is commonly used during special celebrations, and how to quickly resolve any problems during the liturgy should they arise.

Altar servers should have an understanding of the liturgy to fulfil their essential role in the smooth functioning of the liturgy while maintaining a silent reverence and not drawing attention to themselves. The role of Altar servers include preparing the place of worshop and the components needed for worship, holding and carrying books and candles, take part in processions, and ultimately assist the presider in his ministry of leading the worshipping community.
