Although ordained ministers were previously a canonical requirement for validity of a Catholic marriage, in the absence of priests or deacons, a delegated layperson can assist at the marriage and celebrate the Catholic marriage liturgy, and receive the consent of the couple in the name of the Church.

There are many new and prevalent ideas regarding marriage, relating to situations of cohabitation before marriage, people living in de facto relationships, annulment and the status of those living in second marriages, and the recognition of committed same-sex relationships. Is it possible to redefine marriage to include these circumstances, and even to leave the business of establishing a relationship and moving towards fidelity and marriage to lay people with the priest invited to bless the relationship at the end?

The 2015 order of celebrating matrimony is a revised version of the Rite of Marriage, and includes new texts for introductions, collects, and the reception of consent, additional readings, a new chapter on celebrating matrimony in the presence of a lay minister, and has incorporated blessing couples on their anniversary.
