This guideline aims to clarify the current situation with regard to liturgy and worship in parishes and schools, identifying what activities require permissions from copyright owners and where to gain permissions.

This article provides useful examples for copyright citations for texts, readings and music used in the liturgy. It explains the requirements in relation to acknowledgment and reporting of texts and lyrics that are printed in liturgical booklets or displayed on screens.

There is a moral and legal obligation to respect copyright law and the rights of composers and publishers. A copyright licence must be purchased if a school or parish livestreams, reprints or projects copyrighted song lyrics or melodies for any prayer, worship or liturgical celebration. A copyright acknowledgement must be displayed for each song and the songs used each week must be reported to the licensing agency.
