Liturgy and Copyright

LITURGY AND COPYRIGHT INFORMATION

Copyright acknowledgements are required for copyrighted texts reproduced in service booklets and electronic projections used during worship services in order to satisfy copyright obligations. These acknowledgments are normally included in small print at the back of the service booklet or the very bottom of the relevant electronic slides. Below is a helpful list of the form of acknowledgment required for commonly reprinted or projected copyrighted material.

Acknowledgements in booklets or on projection screens must be in a font size which is legible.

LITURGICAL MUSIC UNDER COPYRIGHT

In Australia, copyright lasts for 70 years after the end of the year of death of the author, composer or arranger. An acknowledgment is required to be included in any reprints or projection slides of song lyrics and/or notated melody lines. The acknowledgement should be worded in accordance with the policy of the relevant licence agency or copyright holder. Words or music no longer under copyright are considered to be in the "public domain."

Most Catholic repertoire is administered for reprint, projection and streaming by One License which is jointly owned by GIA Publications, Inc. (GIA) and Oregon Catholic Press (OCP). Willow Publishing are the OneLicense agent in Australia and New Zealand. Participating publishers include OCP, GIA, WLP, Willow Publishing, Hope Publishing, Copycare Pacific, and the majority of independent Australian liturgical and religious music publishers and composers.

On the OneLicense.net website, users can download and report music sung by the assembly and obtain streaming/podcasting and practice track licenses in one convenient and easy-to-use location. One License offers licences that serve various congregational music reprint needs e.g. Annual, Event, and Single-Use Reprint Licenses and Practice-Track and Podcast/Streaming Licenses. N.B. Many pieces originating from non-Catholic Christian denominations are not covered by One License.  www.au.ccli.com

CCLI is another agency which offers music licences for the majority of non-Catholic Christian publishers and some smaller Catholic publishers and composers. N.B. A CCLI licence does not cover the standard Catholic repertoire from GIA, OCP, WLP and other major Catholic publishers.

REPORTING

Accuracy in reporting is extremely important, as it enures that composers and publishers receive fair compensation for their contributions to the global church. Licences will require churches to submit online reports of all pieces reprinted, projected or streamed each week. OneLicense suggests that although weekly reporting is preferred, parishes/organisations may choose an alternative reporting period that suits their needs best. Required Acknowledgement for Music

Copyright licences require projection slides, song sheets and service booklets to display copyright permissions. Acknowledgments should be worded in accordance with the licence agreement.

On projections slides, copyright information should ideally appear on the first and last slides for each song. The acknowledgement should  include the title, author and composer and, at the base of the text/music, the copyright date, the publisher or copyright holder, "All rights reserved." "Used with Permission" and the parish or school copyright Licence Number. Acknowledgments in printed booklets can be included below each individual item or may be grouped collectively at the end.
